Icona di stile e di musica: è così che appare ai miei occhi Lady Starlight. Personaggio forte e affascinante in continua evoluzione. Ecco descritta in poche parole una deejay e producer di Brooklyn (New York), che sta iniziando a far parlare di sé nella scena Techno mondiale. Artista dotata di una conoscenza musicale disarmante, Starlight inizia ad esibirsi come deejay rock nel 2007, per abbracciare solo in storia recente la musica Techno. Colleen Martin, questo il suo vero nome, è on the road con il cast dell’artRAVE Ball, tour mondiale di Lady Gaga, sua migliore amica con la quale ha da sempre condiviso sogni e passioni e che l’ha portata a calcare i palchi più prestigiosi del mondo come sua ”opening act” ufficiale.
Il Team di THE EYES FASHION, ha incontrato Lady Starlight durante l’after Party dello Show tenutosi al Just Cavalli, il club più cool di Milano, dove prima del suo deejay set, abbiamo avuto l’onore di parlare della sua crescita musicale, della sua migliore amica, e ovviamente di musica a 360°.
Hai sempre suonato in piccoli club introno a Brooklyn, mentre adesso stai suonando nelle arene più grandi del mondo. Quali sono le differenze?
Beh, la differenza più grande è sicuramente la capienza. E’ molto più difficile suonare in un piccolo club che in una grande arena. Per il semplice fatto che in un grande palazzetto essendo sopra un palco, e avendo le luci puntate addosso, non riesci a vedere niente quindi è un po’ come suonare da solo in camera tua. Mentre invece in un posto più piccolo, hai tutta la gente intorno… ti senti molto più osservato e sotto pressione.-
Com’è cambiata la tua vita da quando GAGA è diventata una superstar?
Niente è cambiato! Gaga ha sempre cercato di circondarsi di suoi amici… sia io che Breedlove (un altro amico storico di Lady Gaga, anche lui cantante e opening act durante l’artRAVE ndr.) siamo in questo tour, quindi abbiamo possibilità di passare molto tempo tutti insieme. La differenza è che prima eravamo a New York, mentre adesso siamo quasi ogni giorno in una città diversa!
Sei sempre stata una deejay Rock, mentre adesso ti vediamo suonare Techno. Com’è avvenuto questo cambiamento?
E’ semplicemente una trasformazione naturale. Ho sempre cercato di evolvermi in base a ciò che mi rende felice. E’ una cosa che cerco di ricordare sempre anche ai miei fan: ”Reagite in base alla vostra felicità, fate qualcosa solo se siete contenti di farla…seguite l’istinto”. Ho sempre detto che la mia carriera è caratterizzata da pessime decisioni una dietro l’altra (ride ndr.) per il semplice motivo che sono tutti ossessionati dal successo commerciale, mentre io cerco solamente di fare quello che mi piace, e penso che questo sia il miglior modo di rendere altre persone felici.
Un tuo amico ti regala un iPod con una memoria limitata… puoi metterci solamente tre canzoni. Quali sono?

Ho barato, perché la prima canzone dura 23 minuti! (ride ndr). Fai parte dell’artRAVE Ball Tour di Lady Gaga.
Da quando è iniziato il tour, qual è stata la cosa più divertente accaduta on the road?
Quando durante l’after party a Tokyo, mentre stavo suonando, Gaga mi ha versato in testa un intero bicchiere di champagne… c’era alcol ovunque! Ci siamo divertiti un sacco quella sera..
Come hai iniziato a fare la Deejay?
Tutto è iniziato perché andavo a ballare sperando sempre di sentire glam-rock anni 70, ma nessuno mai lo suonava. Così ho deciso di arrangiarmi e di iniziare a fare festa con la musica che volevo io.
Com’è cambiata la tua attrezzatura da quando suonavi Rock, ad oggi?
E’ molto più difficile da usare! Adesso la mia priorità è però quella di produrre… ovviamente essere anche Deejay, ma mi importa moltissimo il processo… la produzione di un brano prima ancora di suonarlo.
Come reagisce un pubblico pop come può essere quello di Lady Gaga alla musica Techno?
(ride ndr) Beh… (ride ndr) Dipende… dipende dai posti! A Milano la gente ha capito, come a Londra, ma in generale in tutta Europa la risposta del pubblico è di gran lunga superiore a quella che ho ricevuto in America, dove è stato davvero difficile… purtroppo là questo genere non è così popolare come lo è qua in Europa… la gente non è abituata a questi suoni, quindi avrei potuto suonare qualsiasi cosa, che purtroppo il pubblico, non avrebbe cambiato espressione… è stato davvero estenuante!
In quali città in Europa hai ricevuto la miglior risposta dal pubblico?
Sicuramente a Milano, e anche in altre parti dell’Italia dove ho avuto modo di suonare… ma anche Spagna e in Portogallo. Sono sempre accolta con grande euforia qui (in Europa). Sai, vedo sempre folle entusiaste ma che non reagiscono nemmeno se gli piace quello che stanno ascoltando, quindi, da performer, avere un pubblico che ti da energia come succede qui, è davvero ispirante.
Quando verrai in Italia con un tuo dj set da solista?
Molto presto, non vedo l’ora!

But that’s just a few-word-description for such a huge deejay and producer of Brooklyn (New York), who is rising in the techno music global scene.
She has a stunning knowledge of music that’s why she started to perform as a rock deejay in 2007 and she recently joined the Techno music industry.
Colleen Martin, that’s her real name, is on the road with the cast of the artRAVE Ball Tour with her best friend Lady Gaga and they have always shared dreams and passions that brought Lady Starlight to join Gaga and to be her official “Opening Act” in the majority of the most prestigious stages in the world.
The Eyes Fashion team met Lady Starlight at the Just Cavalli Club, the coolest Club in Milan, during the after party for the show at the MediolanumForum and we had the pleasure of a little chat before her DJ set and we had the chance to talk about her projects, her best friend Gaga and a 360 degree speech about music.
You have always played in small clubs around Brooklyn and now you are playing in the biggest arenas in the world. What is the difference?
Well, actually the biggest difference is the amount of people. It is way harder to play in front of a small audience because in a big arena you have the lights pointing on you and you can’t see the crowd, it is as if I were playing in my room all alone. Contrariwise the smaller the place is the more pressure I feel!
What changed in your life since Gaga became a superstar?
Actually nothing! Gaga is always surrounded by her best friends… Both Breedlove (old time Gaga’s friend Ed.) and I joined the artRAVE tour so we have the chance to spend a lot of time all together. The only difference is that we used to be in New York and now we move everyday from a city to another one!
You have always been a rock deejay while today you play techno music; how did you shift to this genre?
It’s been a natural shift, I’m in constant evolution and I’m proud of it. I also suggest my fans to act like me: “Act according to your feelings, do what makes you feel happy”. I think that in my career I made a lot of bad decisions (She laughs Ed.) due to my intention to avoid being mainstream or too commercial I feel proud and this is the best way to pursue happiness.
A friend of your gives you an iPod with a limited storage of just 3 songs. Which songs would you upload on it?

You are part of Lady Gaga’s artRave Ball Tour. Since the beginning of the Tour what is the funniest thing that has happened?
During the after-party in Tokyo, as I was playing, Gaga spilled a glass of Champagne all over my hair! We had lot of fun that night.
How did you started your career as a DJ?
Actually I used to go clubbing and I was expecting to dance to ’70 glam-rock music, but I never had the chance to find a DJ playing it. So I decided to make all by myself.
Is there something different in your music equipment since you play Techno Music?
It is way harder now, because I am not just a DJ, I became a music producer. I’m still a DJ but now I handle music production!
How does Gaga’s audience react to your Techno music?
(She laughs Ed.) Well… (She keeps laughing Ed.) It depends… It depends on the city/place. In Milan, as in London and all over Europe, the crowd got into the feeling of my music and they reacted way better then the audience in America where it has been very tough. American people hasn’t got accustomed to those new sounds yet… I could have played anything that they wouldn’t have gotten into my mood. It has been very stressful!
In which city of Europe you received the best feedback?
I can say in Milan and generally in Italy I had a positive reaction… Also Spain and Portugal have been good to me. I’ve always received a huge welcome all over Europe. I’ve seen also some enthusiast audiences that never reacted even if they were enjoying what they were listening to and as a performer I must admit it is important to receive energy from the crowd as it has happened to me here! It motivates me.
When would you perform in Italy as solo artist?
Very soon! I can’t wait for it!
